ISO 9001 Quality Management Consultant

QEC ~ making ISO 9001 work for you ~ since 1992.

A complete ISO 9000 Quality Management Consultancy Service, from the start to Certification, through to maintenance and continual improvement.

What is ISO 9000?
The ISO 9000 tag, covers a suite of International Quality Standards. ISO 9001:2008 'Quality Management Systems - Requirements' is the one to which an Organisation can become Assessed and Certified. So, when companies talk about being Certified to ISO 9000 they have in fact been assessed against the requirements of ISO 9001:2008.

The Standard requires that you define your management processes in a documented system, with a Quality Manual to show process interactions, the six mandatory procedures for control of documents (4.2.3), control of records (4.2.4), internal audit (8.2.2), control of nonconforming product (8.3), corrective action (8.5.2) and preventive action (8.5.3) and any additional procedures you require. It should be tailored to your organisation and can be viewed on the computer network or as hardcopy.

A fully implemented ISO 9000 Quality Management System aims to deliver a consistent quality product/service and to enhance Customer Satisfaction. There is also a requirement to continually improve the effectiveness of the Quality Management System, for the benefit of the Organisation and Customers.

The ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System has many similarities with the other Management Standards, i.e. AS9100, AS9110, AS9120, AC00-56A, ISO 13485, BS EN 13980, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Implementing one Integrated Management System (IMS) means the common elements of the Standards can be combined, thus avoiding duplication of Management Resource.

How do you Start?
A Gap Analysis should be conducted, against the requirements for ISO 9001:2008. After this Initial Review, a documented ISO 9000 Quality Management System structure and Implementation Plan can be developed. The System is then implemented, by following the Implementation Plan. Assessment by a UKAS Accredited (or other National) Certification Body can follow, once the system is fully established. The use of an experienced ISO 9000 Quality Management Consultant can speed up the process, save valuable Management time and avoid building in bureaucracy.

What are the Business Benefits?
By implementing an Integrated Business Management System, and not just a narrowly scoped ISO 9000 Quality Management System, the whole Organisation can benefit. With the focus being on what is right for the Business and 'making ISO 9001 work for you'. There are generally no additional costs in taking this Business focus approach to implementing ISO 9000 - it is just understanding the philosophy of 'what is right for the Business is also good for Quality'. The experienced ISO 9000 Quality Management Consultant will know the level of documentation required for assessment and for the business, and the Organisation should find the following:

  • Structures an Approach to Managing the Business The ISO 9001 Model is an accepted framework, which can be tailored to any Organisation. The Company Manual (aka Quality Manual) defines how the business operates, and a set of measurable objectives defines its direction.

  • Identifies Opportunities for Improving Efficiency and Saving Costs With controlled planning, consistent processes and monitoring (KPI's), areas for improvements can be targeted.

  • Reduces rework and wastage With defined processes and monitoring, rework and scrap can be minimised.

  • Increases Customer Satisfaction and Sales By monitoring and reacting to Customer Satisfaction (not necessarily with questionnaires), existing Customers can be retained and new Sales can be developed. Improving efficiency can improve competitiveness, also some Customers require their Suppliers to be ISO 9000 Certified, leading to more sales.

  • Improves Staff Motivation Through defined roles, responsibilities, objectives, training, communication and empowerment, staff can be motivated to pull together.

  • Identifies Problems and their Solutions The use of Preventive and Corrective Action to identify the cause of problems, and take action to prevent occurrence/recurrence, helps develop better Business Practices.

  • Improves Profitability Quality and Profitability are interrelated. Using the management tools within ISO 9000 to improve quality, impacts on efficiency and hence can improve Profitability. This is through the various benefits outlined above.
